Apple acquires mobile media and data compression firm

Apple has acquired AlgoTrim, a developer of data compression technology based in Malm, Sweden, according to a new report by Swedish industry news service Rapidus. The report says that AlogTrim's CEO and head of development Anders Holtsberg has moved to Silicon Valley and is now available through Apple's switchboard, according to TechCrunch.

AlgoTrim's flagship product is the Code Compression Library, which compresses the firmware of a mobile phone down to half its size. It also optimizes standard data compression codecs like zlib for RISC-based processors like the ARM chips used in iPhones. AlgoTrim's other products include optimized imaging codecs for JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP, as well as real-time video processing using software-based image signal processing.

As mobile phone users get more demanding in the types and quality of media their devices can display, manufacturers like Apple need to offset raw computational power with power savings - an iPhone doesn't do you much good if its battery runs dead in a couple of hours. Companies like AlgoTrim offer an attractive alternative - more thoroughly optimized and efficient compression of data helps maintain efficiency without sacrificing battery life.
